Opportunities for Funding
Mission
The Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Foundation grants financial assistance to organizations that support the preservation, promotion, and advancement of American Indian self-sufficiency and culture in the United States, including programs for (i) the development of American Indian entrepreneurism, (ii) facilitating American Indian education (particularly college, graduate, and post-graduate education), and (iii) the preservation and enhancement of American Indian culture. The Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company (SFNTC) Foundation will only consider proposals that fall within the above charter. Grants generally range from $10,000 – $20,000 and are primarily awarded to organizations that serve Native Americans in the following ways:
Community-Building
– Fulfilling people’s basic needs (food, water, shelter, etc.) that contribute to happy, healthy, and thriving lives
– Implementing reservation-based projects that create long-term community benefits
Education
– Programs explicitly designed to help Native American students continue and complete their education at all levels
Arts & Culture
– Native-driven programs and events that develop cultural wealth and build community connections
– Native-driven language and historic preservation initiatives
The SFNTC Foundation will not consider proposals for general operating expenses.
History
The Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Foundation was formed in April of 1997, and its sole source of funding is Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, Inc., which has made contributions to the Foundation every year since its formation. Past recipients of the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Foundation grant funds include: Afraid of Bear – American Horse Tiospaye; Albuquerque Museum Foundation; All Relations United; American Indian College Fund; Anishiaabe Agriculture Institute; Apache Language Consortium; Brave Heart Society; Center of Southwest Culture, Inc; Four Bridges Traveling Permaculture Institute; Gwch’in Social and Cultural Institute of Alaska; Indian Pueblo Cultural Center; Kayenta Arts Foundation; Koahnic Broadcast Corporation; New Mexico Film Foundation, and Northern Cheyenne Language Consortium.
Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis: deadlines on February 15, May 15, August 15, November 15
Program Overview:
The Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH) grant program is designed to support Indian tribes and organizations that primarily serve and represent Native Hawaiians in sustaining indigenous heritage, culture, and knowledge. The program supports projects such as exhibitions, educational services and programming, workforce professional development, organizational capacity building, and collections stewardship.
National Leadership Grants for Museums support projects that address critical needs of the museum field and that have the potential to advance practice in the profession to strengthen museum services for the American public.
Program Overview:
The Museums for America program supports museums of all sizes and disciplines in strategic, project-based efforts to serve the public through exhibitions, educational/interpretive programs, digital learning resources, professional development, community debate and dialogue, audience-focused studies, and/or collections management, curation, care, and conservation. Museums for America has three project categories:

Program Overview:
Museums Empowered: Professional Development Opportunities for Museum Staff is a special initiative of the Museums for America grant program. It is designed to support projects that use the transformative power of professional development and training to generate systemic change within museums of all types and sizes.
Museums Empowered has four project categories:
Digital Technology: Provide museum staff with the skills to integrate digital technology into museum operations.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Support museum staff in providing inclusive and equitable services to people of diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds and to individuals with disabilities.
Evaluation: Strengthen the ability of museum staff to use evaluation as a tool to shape museum programs and improve outcomes.
Organizational Management: Strengthen and support museum staff as the essential part of a resilient organizational culture.
Program Overview:
The Museum Grants for American Latino History and Culture (ALHC) grant program supports projects that build the capacity of American Latino history and culture museums to serve their communities as well as projects that broadly advance the growth and development of a professional workforce in American Latino institutions.
The Museum Grants for African American History and Culture (AAHC) program is designed to build the capacity of African American museums and support the growth and development of museum professionals at African American museums.
The AAHC program supports projects that nurture museum professionals, build institutional capacity, and increase access to museum and archival collections at African American museums and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
No cost-match is required for requests under $100,000.
Inspire! Grants for Small Museums is a special initiative of the Museums for America program. It is designed to support small museums of all disciplines in project-based efforts to serve the public through exhibitions, educational/interpretive programs, digital learning resources, policy development and institutional planning, technology enhancements, professional development, community outreach, audience development, and/or collections management, curation, care, and conservation. Inspire! has three project categories:

Institutional Capacity
Collections Stewardship and Access
No cost-match is required for requests under $25,000.
The 21st Century Museum Professionals (21MP) grant program advances the growth and development of a diverse workforce of museum professionals. The 21MP program supports projects that offer professional development to the current museum workforce; employ strategies to train and recruit future museum professionals; and support evaluation efforts to identify and share effective practices.
IMLS recognizes the important role of strong local and regional networks as an essential tool for providing peer to peer learning, training and mentoring opportunities. The 21MP program encourages applications from museum associations, museum studies programs at institutions of higher education, and museums that serve as key parts of the professional learning and training environment.

The State, Private, & Tribal Forestry (SPTF) Landscape Scale Restoration (LSR) competitive process is “intended to support high impact projects that promote collaborative, science-based restoration of priority forest landscapes, leverage public and private resources, and advance priorities identified in a State Forest Action Plan (SFAP) or other restoration strategy."
Priority Projects
Priority will be given to project proposals that include any of the following bulleted prioritization factors. Please see the scoring rubric at the end of this document to see the specific sections in which one or more of these priority factors should be detailed to receive priority points.
➢ Promote cross-boundary collaboration:
○ By their proximity to other land ownerships; or
○ By their inclusion of a combination of land ownerships, including tribal, State and local government, and private lands (such as, but not limited to, multiple private landowners; private and state landowners; state and federal landowners; state and local government; or state and Tribal landowners).
➢ Coordinate with or are in proximity to other complementary landscape-scale projects on NFS lands or lands under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Interior or a state that are carried out:
○ Under the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program (16 U.S.C. 7303).
○ In landscape areas designated for insect and disease treatments under section 602 of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 (16 U.S.C. 6591a).
○ Under the Good Neighbor Authority (16 U.S.C. 2113a).
○ Under the stewardship end result contracting and agreement authority (16 U.S.C. 6591c).
➢ Coordinate with or are in proximity to other complementary landscape-scale projects on State land.
➢ Coordinate with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs and appropriate state-level programs.
➢ Leverage funding from multiple entities.
➢ The term disadvantaged communities is used in Executive Order 14008, Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad. The Interim Implementation Guidance for the Justice40 Initiative, released by OMB in July 2021, provides definitions on community and disadvantaged. Projects must include a description of the benefiting community or recipient and how the project benefits or engages underserved communities or people.
Note that the Pacific Islands are not required to provide a match unless the proposed project exceeds $500,000.
